Purpose. The purpose of Yeovil Music Centre is to provide inspiring ensemble opportunities for musicians of all ages and abilities, encouraging the development of skills by playing and/or singing together.
Group Leaders. Our groups are led by some lovely people who are able musicians and enthusiastic tutors. They are Phill, Ian, Chris, Laura, Philippa and Brett.
(N.B. We hope their profiles will appear here soon.)
Committee. Yeovil Music Centre is run by a committee of volunteers selected from the members at each AGM. This year it comprises Norman, Ian, Elaine, Heather, Chris, Richard and Sherry.
Committee members are responsible for making sure that Yeovil Music Centre is viable, safe and fun. They collect subscriptions, appoint and pay the group leaders, pay the rent and insurance, attend to Health and Safety matters (including CRB checks), buy and maintain the equipment, arrange concerts etc., etc.
Its challenge is to secure the future of Yeovil Music Centre, to raise standards, and to live up to the aims of making playing and singing together both productive and enjoyable.
Tuck Shop. Schools have PTAs (Parent Teacher Associations), and hospitals have “Friends of ...” groups, Yeovil Music Centre has Tuck Shop. Established in 1996 it is the most visible enterprise of a small group of volunteers committed to supporting the music centre.
The 'Tuck Shop team' help make Music Centre fun by providing refreshments on Tuesday evenings. More enjoyment is had when the profits
from those sales are given back to the members in the form of trophies, prizes, treats and outings (funds permitting). The team hold a wealth of knowledge about Yeovil Music Centre and contribute a sense of continuity which is appreciated equally by members, parents and tutors. The current team are six parents whose children attend or have attended Music Centre, (joined on an occassional basis by young people...James, Ed, Alex...happy to "put something back" into Music Centre or as part of work-experience programmes). The adults have a background in child-care and/or education, and they share a common commitment to treating children and young people with care and respect.
Others. Our web site was developed by Graham (ex-Saturday Pack etc. etc.), a software developer at BAE. ( If you experience any problems while navigating the web-site please let us know so that he can fix it....its a matter of professional pride).
N.B. We'd like to profile other ex-members,so don't lose touch but let us know what you are doing...See About You below.
While strictly speaking not “one of us” we have recently received much support from Simon Squire (Yeovil College), Pauline Burr (District Council Arts Officer), Councillor Iain Martin (Chairman, South Somerset District Council), Pauline Clarke (County Councillor responsible for services for children and young people) and Sylvia Seal (portfolio holder for leisure, culture and wellbeing).
Many thanks to them all.
